CCTV warning sign

A warning-style notice puts deterrence first. Here is when that makes sense, how to keep it accurate, and how to print one for free.

Warning sign or standard sign?

Every CCTV sign informs. A warning sign also deters. The difference is a single word in a bold header, "WARNING", above the usual "CCTV in operation" statement, and it changes how the sign is read. A standard sign says "you are being recorded". A warning sign says "we are watching, think twice".

That makes warning signs the natural choice for places where deterrence is the main goal: yards, warehouses, loading bays, car parks, construction sites, garages and the rear of commercial premises. It is a less natural fit for a café counter or a reception desk, where a neutral notice keeps the tone welcoming.

Keep it accurate

A warning sign carries the same obligations as any other. It should still say who operates the system, why footage is recorded, and how to get in touch. And it should still be true. "Warning: 24 hour CCTV surveillance" is only appropriate if cameras genuinely record around the clock. The deterrent value of a sign comes from credibility; an exaggerated claim that a visitor can see is false does more harm than good.

Colours and visibility

The yellow and black scheme used on many UK security signs is recognised instantly, and it is what our generator uses in colour mode. If you print in black and white, a solid black header band with white text gives the same immediate contrast. Whichever you choose, make the headline large. On a warning sign at a vehicle entrance, the headline needs to be readable from the driver's seat.

Select the "Warning" style in the Free UK CCTV Sign Maker, choose "Warehouse", "Building / Shared Area" or whichever fits your site, add your organisation and contact details, and download a print-ready PDF at A4, A5 or A6. For outdoor use, laminate it or have it printed on rigid plastic.

Where warning signs work best

  • Vehicle and pedestrian entrances to yards, depots and car parks.
  • Loading bays and rear doors of shops and restaurants.
  • Perimeter fences and gates on industrial and construction sites.
  • Bin stores, bike stores and undercroft parking in residential buildings.

Inside customer-facing spaces, consider the neutral CCTV in operation sign instead, and keep the warning style for the areas people should not be in without a reason.

A sign warns. It does not stop.

It is worth being clear-eyed about what any CCTV sign can do. It deters the opportunist and it records the determined. It does not physically prevent someone who has decided to go ahead. That is a limitation of cameras generally, not of your sign, and it is why layered security exists: signage and cameras to deter and record, alarms to alert, and an active response for the moments when someone breaks in anyway.

A note from the people behind this guide. Fogaway Security Tools are free resources from the makers of the Fogaway security fog system. CCTV records what happens; Fogaway is built for what happens next, filling a room with dense fog in seconds so intruders cannot see what they came for. If that is interesting, see how it works. If not, the guides and the sign maker are yours to use regardless.
